rit-u-al A detailed method of procedure faithfully or regularly followed.
The word ritual revolves around a very simple concept in my mind. Do something, repetitively, with devotion on a regular basis.
It could be anything from an act performed in a religious ceremony, to something as simple as brewing coffee on a Sunday morning, followed by marmalade on toast while reading the morning paper. It immediately makes me think of something joyful, peaceful, or nostalgic.
A good ritual should revolve around the finer details in life.
Like noticing how nature ties into our daily rituals and how incredible it is that we co-exist on this amazing planet, each of us following our own little master plan weaving in and around each other like a flamenco dancer. Give, take, take, give…..
A ritual is almost like a program that we create for ourselves (or others!), something to make us feel comfortable and to appreciate that every minute of the day is a step into the unknown.
By preparing ourselves for whatever the day may bring us, we allow ourselves to flow through the unexpected course that our lives might take on any given day.
And so whether it’s a more serious kind of ritual involved in making sure you’ve got all the tools you need for the job you need to do…..
Or maybe it’s finding comfort in the little things that give you peace….
Or something so simple and pure as the kiss you give your kids before they meet a new day….
It’s really all about a connection back to yourself and the world around you, and how you fit into the bigger picture. It’s about sharing, and knowing that we all have our own unique paths yet all on slightly different trajectories. It’s a way of connecting us with commonality so that we can relate, feel and share.
And just how good does it feel when you create your own rituals based on pure pleasure and the company of others??
It’s the ultimate in “routine”, the cherry on top of “mundane”, a feast of connection, joy, and laughter….
What rituals have you created for yourself out of pure enjoyment? What rituals are a part of your life that you feel you have less control over and wish you could change??
